Why we breed what we breed.
Every breeder I have ever known has professed to breed for temperament, conformation, and athletic ability. I would be lying to say we don't strive for those ideals as well. However, the determining factor that has guided our breeding practices has been demand. We want to breed horses that are wanted.
We have always stood our stallions to all breeds of mares. We believe the value of a horse is not determined by the papers it may or may not carry, or the championships it may or may not have won, but by the worth is has to it's owner. The most fulfilling thing about owning these magnificent stallions has been sharing them with other owners. The fact that these stallions helped you create your dream horse proves their success. We love that our horses can perform in a show ring, that their get are being judged and approved by some of the highest organizations in the country, but that's not all we breed for. Some of the greatest horses in the world never set foot in a show ring, they are never evaluated by a judge from another country, and they are never pitted against a clock. Some of the greatest horses in the world travel hundreds of miles down quite paths, carrying their riders through rivers, over mountains, and down the sides of highways. Some give a grandchild their first horse back ride, listen to a teenager's broken heart, meet you at the end of the drive after a hard day at work when you want to forget about the rest of the world. Some are super stars at church hay rides and local parades. If we help produce a horse, we want that horse to be wanted.

2012 Breeding Season Schedule.
All three of our stallions will be available via cooled semen. Semen can be picked up at the ranch or shipped. Breeding season will begin April 1 and will continue until July 31. Our collection schedule is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Semen orders must be placed by 8 PM CDT the night before to ensure we can fill your order. We ship via Fed Ex. Please check with your local Fed Ex to ensure delivery times and schedules. We will not be able to ship on holiday weekends when Fed Ex does not deliver overnight packages so please plan accordingly.
Cooled Semen.
All breeding's are done using collected cooled semen. If you have not used cooled semen before, please feel free to ask any questions you may have and discuss the breeding process with us and your veterinarian. Cooled semen offers us many benefits as stallion owners and it offers you many benefits as a mare owner. By using cooled semen, your mare never has to leave your care. The use of cooled semen eliminates the need for live cover which reduces the risk of infection and physical injury during the breeding process.
2012 Breeding Contracts.
The biggest reason we have contracts is to ensure everyone is on the same page before we begin the breeding process. Do not hesitate to ask questions or express your concerns. Your mare is in your care throughout this entire breeding process and you will be maintaining her health and monitoring the foaling process. We encourage you to consult with your veterinarian before purchasing a breeding and we are happy to talk to them about any of their concerns as well. You and your veterinarian will play the primary roles in getting your mare in foal and maintaining a health pregnancy. We will do everything possible to provide you with the best possible semen and any support we can along the way. Don't hesitate to call or email at any time during the breeding process.
2012 Breeding Contracts are available at the bottom of this page and on the stallions individual pages. The Breeding Contract is for your 2012 Breeding. Please read over all the contracts before purchasing your breeding and ask any questions you may have. All breeding's have a Live Foal Guarantee. If for any reason, your mare does not deliver a live foal, you will have to return verification from your veterinarian before you may rebreed your mare.
The Breeding Soundness Form is to be filled out by you and your veterinarian. A current 2012 culture is required before a breeding is attempted unless your mare is a maiden mare or you are breeding on foal heat. This is to unsure the best possible chance of conception. Also discuss your mares reproductive history and current health with your veterinarian prior to purchasing the breeding.
Cooled Semen Contract. All breeding's are done via cooled semen. We ship semen using Fed Ex. You may also chose to pick your semen up at the ranch or have your mare bred by one of our local veterinarians. Again, please read over the contract entirely and let us know if you have any questions.
We reserve the right to refuse any breeding.

Equine Viral Arteritis
EVA is an equine disease that has the potential to be shipped along with semen from anywhere in the world. Arteritis is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause fever, respiratory illness, ocular inflammation, edema (swelling; especially of the limbs), birth of weak or sick foals, and abortion. It can be transmitted through the respiratory route or venereal route (through natural cover or artificial insemination). That means it can cause a flu-like disease in competition or non-breeding animals, and that same virus can cause abortion in mares. The arteritis virus also can cause some horses to develop an immune response (have antibodies), but they never have any obvious clinical signs.
One of the scariest problems for breeders is that the virus can become established in sexually mature males, causing them to shed the virus in their semen for years. The virus can live in cooled shipped semen and infect the mare being inseminated. The only way to be sure a stallion is not shedding the virus in his semen is to test the stallion and vaccinate.
All of our stallions at The 4 13 Ranch have been properly tested by our veterinarian and are on a vaccination schedule.
